Parathormone is a hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands and regulates plasma calcium level. Calcitonin is a peptide hormone secreted by the thyroid gland that inhibits calcitriol production in the kidneys, thus lowering blood calcium levels. Vitamin D helps to maintain normal blood calcium levels and has been shown to be effective in preventing osteoporosis. The thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), are the most important regulators of body metabolism.
